# Exams

## Introduction

Exams let you create assessments within your cBook to test your learners' knowledge. Each exam consists of a starting page, one or more questions, and evaluation pages that show results after completion. You can configure passing grades, attempt limits, question randomization, and much more.

Exams are added to your cBook's content tree just like chapters and slides. To create an exam, click on the exam icon in the toolbar above the content tree.

## Exam Structure

Every exam has three parts:

1. **Starting Page** — The introduction learners see before beginning the exam
2. **Questions** — The individual question slides that learners answer
3. **Evaluation Pages** — Two result pages shown after completion: one for passing, one for failing

## Exam Settings

Select your exam in the content tree and open the **General Settings** tab to configure the following options:

### Passing Grade

Set the minimum score a learner must achieve to pass, using the **Passing grade in %** slider (1–100%). The default is 80%. A visual scale shows the fail/pass threshold.

### Limit Attempts

Check **Limit attempts** to restrict how many times a learner can retake the exam. When enabled, enter the number of allowed attempts. Set to 0 for unlimited attempts. By default, attempts are limited to 3.

### Randomize Questions

Check **Randomize questions** to display questions in a random order each time the exam is taken. When disabled, questions always appear in the order you created them.

### Question Subset System

Check **Use question subset system** to randomly select a subset of questions for each attempt. When enabled, specify how many questions should be selected from the total pool. This requires at least 2 questions in the exam.

For example, if you have 20 questions and set the subset to 10, each learner will see a different random selection of 10 questions per attempt.

### Navigation Within the Exam

Check **Allow backwards and forwards navigation within exam** to let learners jump between questions freely. When disabled, learners must answer questions sequentially and cannot go back.

### Access to Supplementary Materials

Three separate dropdowns control what learners can access during the exam:

- **Allow access to bonus material**
- **Allow access to notes**
- **Allow access to Activity Center**

Each has three options:

- **Never in this test** — Blocked during the exam (default)
- **Allow this test's materials** — Only materials attached to this exam are accessible
- **Allow the entire cBook's materials** — All materials from the cBook are accessible

## Starting Page

The **Starting Page** tab lets you design the introduction learners see before starting the exam. Use the rich text editor to create your content.

### Start Button (Required)

Every starting page must include a **Start Test** button. Use the corresponding button in the editor toolbar to insert it. Without this button, learners cannot begin the exam, and the page cannot be saved.

### Variable Placeholders

You can insert dynamic placeholders into your starting page text that automatically display the exam's settings to learners:

- **Variable: Passing grade** — Shows the minimum required score (e.g., "80%")
- **Variable: Max. number of attempts** — Shows the attempt limit (e.g., "3" or "unlimited")

These placeholders update automatically when you change the exam settings.

### Background Image

You can optionally add a background image to the starting page via the Asset Manager.

## Question Types

Click **Add a question** at the bottom of the exam in the content tree to add questions. The following question types are available:

### Multiple Choice

Learners select one or more correct answers from a list of options. Configure:

- **Answers** — Add as many answer options as needed using the **Add answer** button
- **Correct answers** — Mark one or more answers as correct using the checkmark toggle
- **Single Choice** — Check **Single Choice Question** to allow only one answer selection (radio buttons instead of checkboxes)
- **Background images** — Optionally use background images on answer options for visual quizzes

### True/False

A simplified question type where learners choose between two options (typically "True" and "False" or "Correct" and "Incorrect").

### Drag and Drop

Visual questions where learners drag elements into the correct positions or categories.

## Evaluation Pages

The **Evaluation Page** tab lets you design two separate result pages:

### Passed Page

Displayed when the learner achieves the passing grade. The default message is: "Congratulations! You have passed this exam."

### Failed Page

Displayed when the learner does not reach the passing grade. The default message is: "Unfortunately, you didn't pass this test."

The failed page can include a **Repeat Test** button (inserted via the editor toolbar) that allows learners to retry the exam if they have remaining attempts. The button is automatically disabled when no attempts are left.

### Variable Placeholders for Evaluation Pages

Both the passed and failed pages support these dynamic placeholders:

- **Variable: Test score** — The learner's final score
- **Variable: Number of correct answers** — How many questions were answered correctly (e.g., "8/10")
- **Variable: Result details** — A detailed breakdown showing each question and whether it was answered correctly
- **Variable: Passing grade** — The minimum required score
- **Variable: Max. number of attempts** — The attempt limit

Both pages also support optional background images.

## How Exams Work for Learners

When a learner encounters an exam in the cBook, here's what happens:

1. The **starting page** is shown with the exam introduction and a start button
2. After clicking start, **questions** are presented one by one (or in random order, if configured)
3. If navigation is allowed, learners can move freely between questions; otherwise, they proceed sequentially
4. After answering all questions, the exam is evaluated automatically
5. The **passed** or **failed** evaluation page is shown, depending on the score
6. If the learner failed and has remaining attempts, they can click the **Repeat Test** button to try again
7. If the question subset system is enabled, each retry may present different questions

## View Test Results

Test results are transferred to your learning management system via the SCORM interface. Depending on which LMS you use, you’ll find the results for each test—or even for each question—in the corresponding section there. cBook uses SCORM 1.2.

Note: If you’ve exported your cBook as a standalone HTML package, you won’t be able to view the results. However, your learners will definitely see their test outcomes on the results page directly within cBook.
