# Generate Multiple Choice Questions with AI

Writing good quiz questions takes time. With **Generate questions with AI**, you can have AI write several Multiple Choice questions at once, based on your chapters, your own files, or a short description of the topic. You check and polish every draft before anything is added to your cBook. Each question you keep becomes its own **Multiple Choice** slide.

## Before You Start

The AI option only shows up when all of these are true:

- **Your organization has the feature switched on.** If you can't find it, ask your administrator.
- **Your organization still has AI budget left.** When the budget is used up, the option is hidden. The **AI budget** indicator at the top of the editor shows how much is left.
- **You can edit the cBook.** It isn't locked, and you have permission to edit content.
- **You're adding the questions inside a chapter.** It doesn't work at the top level of your cBook or inside an exam.

You don't need to select anything first.

## Where to Find It

You start the AI from the slide picker that opens in the **nodes tree**. There are three ways to open it:

- **Right-click** a slide or chapter in the tree and choose **Insert above…**, **Insert below…** or **Insert inside…** (the last one is only for chapters).
- **Hover** over the gap between two items in the tree, wait a moment, and click the **+** that appears.
- In an **empty chapter**, click **Add slide**.

At the top of the picker, under **Generate with AI**, click the **Multiple Choice** card with the little sparkle.

**Good to know:** The **Add new** button in the top bar doesn't show the AI option. Start from the tree instead. The AI section also disappears while you type in the picker's search field.

## The Wizard at a Glance

A dialog called **Generate questions with AI** opens. It guides you through four steps:

1. **Question type**
2. **Sources & feedback**
3. **Prompt & amount**
4. **Review drafts**

At the top, you see where the questions will go, for example "Into Chapter 2 · At the end" or "After 'Introduction'". This depends on where you opened the picker. To use a different chapter, click **Change**. The questions then go at the end of the chapter you pick.

You can click on an earlier step at any time to go back.

## Step 1: Question Type

Choose what kind of questions you want:

- **Multiple choice:** Every question can have several correct answers.
- **Single choice:** Every question has exactly one correct answer.
- **Mix both:** AI decides for each question. It uses single choice when one answer is clearly right, and multiple choice when several apply.

Whatever you choose, each question becomes its own Multiple Choice slide. In **Mix both** mode, you can still switch the type of each question later, in the review step.

## Step 2: Sources & Feedback

### Source material (what AI reads)

This step tells AI what to base the questions on. You can use chapters from your cBook, your own files, or both.

**Chapters tab**

- Tick the chapters AI should read. The number next to each chapter shows how many slides AI can read in it, such as pages, media or interactive slides.
- Question slides don't count, and chapters with nothing to read aren't listed.
- The chapter you're adding questions to is ticked for you. If it has nothing to read yet, AI suggests the nearest chapter before it instead.
- If you tick a chapter, its sub-chapters are included too.
- Use the search field, or **Select all** / **Clear all**, to choose chapters quickly.

**Linear vs. free cBooks**

- **Linear cBooks:** AI only uses slides that come *before* the new questions, because learners haven't seen the rest yet. Chapters that come later are locked.
- **Free cBooks:** You can pick any chapter. If some of it comes after the questions, you see a warning, because many learners will reach the questions before they've read that content.

**Files tab**

- Drag files into the drop zone, click it to browse, or click **Choose from asset manager**.
- Allowed file types: PDF, Word, PowerPoint, text files and images (JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP).
- You can add up to 10 files.
- Files you upload here are **only for AI to read**. They are not saved to your asset manager.

You don't have to pick any sources. If you skip them, you describe the topic in your own words in the next step.

### Feedback to write (optional)

Choose which feedback texts AI should write for every question:

- **Global feedback when answered correctly:** a message shown after a fully correct answer. On by default.
- **Global feedback when answered incorrectly:** a message shown after a wrong answer. On by default.
- **Inline feedback per answer option:** a short note shown next to each answer. Off by default.

These choices apply to every question in this round. You can still edit all feedback in the drafts.

## Step 3: Prompt & Amount

### How many questions?

Use the **–** and **+** buttons to choose between 1 and 10 questions. The default is 3.

Below the number, you see a suggestion for how many questions your material can support. Click **Use suggestion** to take it.

### What should the questions focus on?

Here you tell AI what matters to you. For example: "Test whether learners can apply the steps from the chapter, not just recall definitions."

- If you picked sources, this field is **optional**.
- If you didn't pick any sources, it's **required**.

Not sure what to write? Click **Suggest prompts**. AI offers a few ideas as chips, and clicking a chip adds it to your text. Click **Suggest others** for new ideas.

If the chapter already has questions, AI tells you it will avoid repeating them.

### Drafting

Click **Draft 3 questions** (the number matches your choice). You see the progress while AI writes. If you click **Cancel**, you go back to step 3.

## Step 4: Review Drafts

This is where you check and fine-tune every question before it's added.

### Moving between drafts

- Each question has its own tab: **Draft 1**, **Draft 2** and so on. A dot means you haven't looked at that draft yet.
- Use **Previous** / **Next**, or the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard.
- Click the **+** tab to have AI write one more question (up to 10 in total).

### Editing a draft

- **Click any text to edit it directly.** This works for the question, the description, the answers and the feedback.
- **The sparkle next to a field** (**Regenerate with AI**) rewrites just that one field.
- **Mark answers as right or wrong** with the toggle next to each answer.
- - Single choice: exactly one answer is correct.
    - Multiple choice: at least one answer must stay correct.
- **Add answer:** AI writes one more answer option (up to 8 per question).
- **Delete an answer:** every question needs at least 2 answers.
- **Drag answers** to change their order.
- **Slide name:** edit it, or click the sparkle to name the slide after the question.
- **Mix both mode only:** switch a question between Multiple and Single.

### Draft actions

- **New take:** AI rewrites the whole question.
- **Discard:** removes the question from this round. You need to keep at least one.

### Adding the slides

When you're happy, click **Generate 3 slides** (the number matches your drafts). The new Multiple Choice slides are added to your chapter, in the same order as your drafts, at the position shown at the top of the dialog.

The footer tells you how many drafts you haven't looked at yet. This is only a reminder, and it doesn't stop you from adding the slides.

**Important:** Nothing is added to your cBook until you click **Generate**. If you close the dialog before that, you're asked whether to discard your drafts.

## After Generating

Your new slides are normal Multiple Choice slides. You can open them and change everything as usual:

- Switch between **Multiple choice** and **Single choice** in the **Question type** setting.
- Edit the answers, the correct answers and the feedback.
- Add images, a background image or audio. AI doesn't add any media.
- Turn on the **Retry** button after a wrong answer.

## Step-by-Step Guides

### Quick check questions for a chapter you've just written

1. Right-click the last slide of the chapter and choose **Insert below…**.
2. Click **Multiple Choice** under **Generate with AI**.
3. Keep **Multiple choice** or pick **Single choice**, then click **Next**.
4. Leave the chapter ticked (it's suggested for you) and click **Next**.
5. Click **Use suggestion** or set your own number, then click **Draft**.
6. Read through each draft, fix anything that isn't right, and click **Generate**.

### Questions from a PDF or presentation

1. Open the wizard in the chapter where the questions should go.
2. In step 2, open the **Files** tab and drop in your PDF or PowerPoint. Untick the chapters if you only want AI to use the file.
3. In step 3, add a focus, such as "Focus on the safety rules on pages 4 to 6."
4. Draft, review and generate.

### Questions on a topic without any material

1. In step 2, don't tick any chapters or add any files, and click **Next**.
2. In step 3, describe the topic and the level clearly, such as "Basic questions about GDPR for new employees, no legal jargon."
3. Draft, review carefully and generate.

### Questions with detailed feedback for every answer

1. In step 2, under **Feedback to write**, also tick **Inline feedback per answer option**.
2. In step 4, click **Feedback** on any answer to check or edit its note:
3. - **If selected** and **If missed** for correct answers
    - **If selected** and **If left unselected** for wrong answers

### Not happy with the results?

- **One question is off:** click **New take**.
- **Only one answer or one sentence is off:** click the sparkle next to it.
- **All of them are off:** go back to step 3, change your prompt, and click **Redraft all**. Click **Back to drafts** to return to your current drafts.

## Troubleshooting

- **I can't see Generate with AI.** Make sure you opened the picker from the tree (not from **Add new**), you're inside a chapter rather than an exam, and you haven't typed in the search field. If it's still missing, the feature may be switched off for your organization or the AI budget may be used up. Ask your administrator.
- **My chapter isn't listed as a source.** It has nothing AI can read yet, for example because it only contains question slides.
- **"AI couldn't finish this. Please try again."** Something went wrong while AI was working. Try again.
- **Is there a language setting?** No. AI writes in your cBook's default language.
