AI Book Mode
What is Book Mode?
Book Mode adds a structured, visual summary to a video slide — so learners can quickly look things up once they've been introduced to a topic by watching the video. Instead of rewatching the full video, they get a concise study card with key points, terms, and chapters extracted directly from the video content.
Book Mode is available on Sequence, MediaPage, Mr Fish, and Extension Page slides. You'll find it as a dedicated Book Mode tab in the editor toolbar. AI-generated Book Mode is only available on MediaPage slides.
Getting Started
To use AI Book Mode, two things need to be in place:
- Your account needs the AI Book Mode feature enabled and available AI budget.
- The slide needs a main video attached — the AI analyzes this video to generate the summary.
When you open the Book Mode tab on a MediaPage, you'll see a toggle at the top: Generate with AI. This switches between AI-generated content and manual editing. When the toggle is on, you work with the version-based AI editor. When it's off, you get a simple rich text editor where you can write your own Book Mode content and enable or disable it with a checkbox.
On other slide types (Sequence, Mr Fish, Extension Page), only manual Book Mode is available — there is no AI toggle.
You can also add a background image to your Book Mode card, regardless of whether you're using AI or manual mode.
The AI Editor Interface
When AI mode is active, the editor is split into two main areas:
Versions panel (left) — Shows all generated versions with their status and date. Each version has a status badge:
- Active version — The version currently published to learners
- Draft — A working version you can still edit and refine
- Processing — Generation is in progress (with a progress bar)
- Failed — Something went wrong during generation
Preview pane (center) — Shows a live preview of the selected version's rendered content. When viewing a draft, you can hover over any section to see a Refine button appear — click it to open the section editor.
Generating Your First Version
When no versions exist yet, you'll see the generation panel front and center:
- By default, the AI generates a brief, concise overview of the video — covering the main topic, key points, and important terms. If you have other preferences, describe them in the prompt field.
- Optionally enter a prompt to steer the generation. For example: "Focus on minute 01:10 - 02:30, include all details, or explain terms for beginners."
- Click Generate.
The AI analyzes the full video and produces a structured summary. You can follow the progress in the Versions panel via the progress bar and status label. Once complete, the version appears as a draft ready for review.
Note: If no main video is attached to the slide, the Generate button is disabled and you'll see the message "Add a main video to enable generation."
Working with Versions
Book Mode uses its own versioning system, separate from the regular slide save. This means you can generate, edit, and compare multiple versions without affecting your slide until you're ready.
Creating a new version:
Click New draft in the Versions panel. A dialog opens with two options:
- Leave the prompt empty to start from a copy of the current base version.
- Enter a prompt (e.g., "make it more concise") to have the AI generate a fresh draft.
Selecting a version:
Click any version in the list to preview it. The currently selected version is highlighted with a turquoise border.
Making a version active:
Once you're happy with a draft, it becomes the published version that learners see. The active version is marked with a turquoise "Active version" badge.
Deleting a version:
Click the delete icon (trash can) on any version. A confirmation dialog appears: "Delete this Book Mode entry? This cannot be undone."
Editing and Refining Sections
This is where the AI editor really shines. Every section of the generated content — key points, terms, chapters, the bottom line — can be individually refined.
To edit a section:
- Make sure you have a draft version selected (non-draft versions are read-only).
- Hover over any section in the preview. A turquoise Refine pill appears in the top-right corner.
- Click the section to open the Edit & refine section drawer on the right side.
The section editor has two parts:
Rich text editor (top):
A full formatting toolbar with headings, bold, italic, underline, text color, ordered/bulleted lists, alignment, and links. You can directly edit the section content here, then click Apply to draft to save your changes.
AI refinement tools (bottom):
Under "Ask the agent to refine this," you'll see a note confirming the refinement is grounded in the full video analysis (showing the video duration).
Quick refinements — One-click buttons for common adjustments:
- Expand — Make the section longer and more detailed
- More concise — Shorten the section
- Add an example — Include a practical example
- More technical — Use more specialized language
- Simpler — Use simpler, more accessible language
Custom instruction — For specific requests, type exactly what you want in the text field (e.g., "Go deeper on why time matters more than the rate.") and click Regenerate.
After any AI refinement, the section updates automatically in the preview. You can continue refining or click Apply to draft to confirm your manual edits.
AI Mode vs. Manual Mode
AI mode (Generate with AI toggle on — MediaPage only):
- Book Mode is always enabled when AI is active
- Content is managed through the version system
- You generate, refine, and activate versions
- The slide's regular Save button is hidden — all saving happens through the Book Mode version controls
Manual mode (Generate with AI toggle off, or non-MediaPage slides):
- You see a checkbox to enable or disable Book Mode on this slide
- A TinyMCE rich text editor lets you write free-form HTML content
- No version management — your content saves with the slide as usual
Switching from AI to manual clears the manual editor content. Switching back to AI restores the last active AI version.
What Learners See
When Book Mode is active on a slide, learners see the AI-generated (or manually written) summary card instead of the video in the slide's study/story mode view. The card uses a responsive layout that adapts to the available space — from a single column on small screens to a multi-column grid on larger displays. If you've added a background image, it appears behind the card content.
Tips and Best Practices
- Start with the default generation (leave the prompt empty) to see what the AI produces, then refine from there.
- Use quick refinements for fast adjustments before writing custom instructions.
- Create multiple versions with different prompts to compare approaches — for example, one version for beginners and one for advanced learners.
- Use the prompt for focused summaries — you can direct the AI to specific timestamps, topics, or levels of detail.
- If a generation fails, simply create a new draft and try again with a different prompt.
