The Main Editor – Your Workspace for Building cBooks
The editor is where you build and organize your cBook content. It brings together content navigation, search tools, favorites, and slide editing into one streamlined workspace.
This article walks you through the main areas of the editor: the Breadcrumb Pill, Rail, Content Tree, Search & Replace, Favorites, and the Sub Bar.
Layout Overview
When you open a cBook for editing, the interface is divided into these areas:
- Top bar with the Breadcrumb Pill — shows where you are and lets you switch between cBooks
- Rail — a narrow icon bar on the left edge with three buttons
- Side panel — opens next to the Rail and shows either the Content Tree, Search & Replace, or Favorites
- Sub Bar — a toolbar above the editing canvas with tabs and actions for the selected slide
- Canvas — the main editing area where you work on your slide content
Breadcrumb Pill
The Breadcrumb Pill sits in the center of the top bar and shows your current location within the cBook: cBook > Chapter > Slide.
What you can do:
- Switch cBook — Click the cBook name (the white pill on the left) to open a list of all your cBooks. Select one to jump straight into it. If you have more than five cBooks, a search field appears to help you find the right one.
- Jump to chapter — Click the chapter name to navigate to that chapter.
- See your current slide — The rightmost segment shows the slide you're currently editing, along with a small icon indicating the slide type (e.g. Sequence, PageBuilder, Exam).
- cBook actions menu — Click the three-dot menu (⋮) on the left end for quick access to:
- Preview entire cBook
- cBook settings
- Export cBook
- Translations
On smaller screens, only the current slide name is visible to save space.
Rail
The Rail is the narrow vertical bar on the far left of the editor. It contains three icon buttons that toggle the side panel open and closed:
- Content tree (tree icon) — Opens the Content Tree panel where you see and manage your cBook's structure
- Search & Replace (magnifying glass icon) — Opens the Search & Replace panel
- Favorites (star icon) — Opens the Favorites panel. A small badge on this button shows how many slides you've starred.
Click a button to open that panel. Click the same button again to close the side panel entirely, giving you more room for the editing canvas.
On mobile devices, the Rail moves to the bottom of the screen and becomes a horizontal toolbar.
Content Tree
The Content Tree is the main navigation panel for your cBook's structure. It displays all your content in a hierarchical tree: chapters contain slides, and some chapters may contain exams with questions inside them.
Header: The panel header shows the title "Content" along with a summary count — for example, "5 slides · 2 chapters".
Navigating the tree
- Click any item to select it and open it in the editing canvas
- Expand or collapse chapters and exams by clicking the arrow next to them
- Each item shows a color-coded icon indicating its type (chapter, page, sequence, exam, question, etc.) and its name
- Slides show a sequential number (1, 2, 3…) next to their icon
- A small colored dot appears if a slide has bonus material attached
Organizing your content
- Drag and drop items to reorder them. When you drag an item, drop indicators show you where it can land: above, below, or inside a chapter/exam.
- Right-click any item — or click the three-dot menu (⋮) that appears when you hover over or select a row — to open the context menu with these options:
- Rename (or double-click the name, or press F2)
- Duplicate
- Cut, Copy, Paste (with options to paste above, below, or inside)
- Insert above / below / inside — opens a picker to choose what type of slide to add
- Add to favorites or Remove from favorites
- Move to chapter — move the item into a different chapter
- Copy link to slide — copies a shareable link
- Expand all / Collapse all (for chapters and exams)
- Delete
Adding content
- Use the Add chapter button at the top of the tree to create a chapter
- Use the Add other… button to add other content types
- Empty chapters show a prompt with an Add slide button
- Empty exams show a prompt with an Add question button
- Hover between items to reveal a quick insert zone where you can add or paste content
Tip at the bottom of the panel: "Drag to reorder · right-click for actions"
Important rule: Only chapters can sit at the top level. All slides, including exams, must be placed inside a chapter.
Search & Replace
The Search & Replace panel lets you find text across all slides in your cBook and optionally replace it.
Searching
- Click the Search & Replace button in the Rail (magnifying glass icon)
- Type your search term in the Search field (minimum 3 characters)
- Results appear immediately in a tree structure, grouped by slide
Each result shows:
- The slide name with its type icon
- The content area where the match was found (e.g. "Slide header: Title", "Content", "Question", "Answer #1", "Feedback")
- A text snippet with the matching text highlighted in yellow, along with surrounding context
- For answers and feedback in questions: a green checkmark if the answer is marked as correct, or a red X if it is marked as incorrect
You can expand or collapse individual results, or use the Expand all / Collapse all buttons in the toolbar. Click Go to slide next to any result to jump directly to that slide in the editor.
Replacing
- After searching, enter the replacement text in the Replace field
- Use the checkboxes next to results to select which matches you want to replace — you can be selective or use Select all
- Click the Replace button, which shows the count of selected occurrences (e.g. "Replace (12 occurrences)")
- After replacement, the results update to show the replaced text highlighted in green, and the panel shows your original search term with an arrow pointing to the replacement (e.g. "color → colour")
The Replace button is disabled when no occurrences are selected or when the search and replace texts are identical.
Favorites
The Favorites panel is a template library for slides you've starred. It makes it easy to reuse slides across your cBooks.
How to favorite a slide
- In the Content Tree, hover over any slide and click the star icon, or
- Right-click a slide and choose Add to favorites
Starred slides appear in the Favorites panel with a small toast notification confirming the action.
Browsing favorites
The panel has two tabs:
- All cBooks — shows all your favorited slides from every cBook you have access to
- In this cBook — shows only favorites from the cBook you're currently editing
Each tab shows a count of favorites.
Each favorite displays:
- A type icon (indicating the slide type)
- The slide name
- The source cBook name, slide type, and last updated date
Using favorites as templates
Each favorite has two action buttons:
- Go to slide (arrow icon) — Jumps to the original slide in its source cBook. If the slide is in a different cBook, the tooltip shows "Go to slide in [cBook name]".
- Copy (copy icon) — Copies the slide so you can paste it into your current cBook.
When you click Copy, a destination hint appears at the top of the panel telling you exactly where the copy will be inserted:
- "Copy will insert at the end of this cBook" — if nothing is selected
- "Copy will insert at the end of [Chapter name]" — if a chapter or exam is selected
- "Copy will insert after [Slide name] in [Chapter name]" — if a slide is selected
- "Copy will insert after [Slide name]" — if the target is in the same chapter
Empty state
If you haven't starred any slides yet, the panel shows: "No favorites yet — Star a slide in the tree to save it as a template."
Sub Bar
The Sub Bar is the horizontal toolbar directly above the editing canvas. It has two sections: editing tabs on the left and action buttons on the right.
Editing tabs
The tabs change depending on what type of slide you have selected. Click a tab to switch between different editing modes for that slide. Here are the most common configurations:
Content pages, interactions:
- Preview · Edit · Bonus Material
Exams:
- General · Starting Page · Evaluation Page · Bonus Material
Community interactions (Essay, Word Cloud):
- Preview · Edit · Evaluation · Bonus Material
Media pages:
- Preview · Edit · Book Mode · Bonus Material
Some slide types may also show a Developer Tools tab for advanced technical settings.
On mobile, tab labels are hidden and only icons are shown.
Action buttons (right side)
- Save status indicator — Shows one of three states:
- Saved — all changes have been saved (with a timestamp)
- Saving… — a save is in progress
- Unsaved changes — you have modifications that haven't been saved yet
- Open preview in new tab — Opens a live preview of the current slide in a separate browser tab
- Save button — Saves the current slide. For AI-generated slides that are awaiting review, this button shows "Approve" instead.
If another author is currently editing the same slide, a warning icon appears with a glowing animation to alert you about concurrent editing.
