The Multiple Choice Question Editor
Multiple choice and single choice questions now have a new editor. You edit the question right on the slide, and it looks the way your learners will see it. Everything else (question type, media, feedback and the retry button) is in the Multiple choice settings panel on the right.
The new editor opens for multiple choice and single choice questions, inside and outside a test. Other question types, such as true/false, still open in the previous editor.
Editor overview
The editor has two areas:
- The slide (canvas): your question as learners will see it. Click any text to edit it, mark the correct answers and add images.
- Multiple choice settings (panel on the right): the sections Question type, Media, Answers, Global feedback and Retry button.
In a narrow browser window, the settings panel is hidden. Open it with the Settings button in the toolbar above the slide.
About themes: If your cBook's theme supports the new editor, the slide uses your theme's colors, fonts and answer styles. If it doesn't, you'll see this notice: "The current theme does not support WYSIWYG editing. The preview below is unstyled." You can still edit everything. The slide just uses a plain standard look in the editor.
Building blocks of the slide
From top to bottom, a question slide contains:
- Overline (optional): a short line above the question
- Question: your actual question
- Caption (optional): a subheading under the question
- Description (optional): extra text, for example instructions or context
- Answers: the options learners choose from
- Link to the next slide (optional)
- A preview of the Evaluate button (and Try again, if you turned it on)
Empty fields show a placeholder such as "Overline (optional)", so you can always find and fill them. Learners won't see empty fields.
Editing text on the slide
- Click a text field on the slide: the question, the description or an answer.
- A formatting toolbar appears. Use it for bold, lists, links or formulas.
- When you're finished, click Done, press Escape or click somewhere else on the slide.
You can only edit one field at a time.
Link to the next slide: Learners see this link only after they submit their answers. The editor always shows it so you can set it up.
Working with answers
Adding and deleting answers
- To add an answer, click Add answer below the answers on the slide, or + Add answer in the Answers section of the settings panel. The panel also shows how many answers the question has.
- To delete an answer, click the waste-bin icon on the right side of that answer.
Learners see the answers in the same order as in the editor. New answers are added at the end of the list.
Marking the correct answer(s)
Each answer has a check marker on its left side.
- Click the marker to mark the answer as correct. Click it again to unmark it.
- You can also click an empty part of the answer box. Clicking the answer text opens the text for editing and doesn't change whether the answer is correct.
- Correct answers show a green β Correct label.
In a single choice question, only one answer can be correct. When you mark another answer, the mark moves to it.
Configuration options
Question type
- Multiple choice: there can be several correct answers, and learners can pick more than one (checkboxes).
- Single choice: there is one correct answer, and learners pick exactly one option (radio buttons).
If you switch from multiple choice to single choice while several answers are marked correct, only the first correct answer stays marked.
Media
- Background image: click Add background image to pick an image from the gallery. You can also drag an image file straight onto the slide: a "Drop a background image" overlay appears, and the image uploads when you drop it. To remove it, use Remove background on the slide, or Remove in the panel.
- Alt text: The background image's alt text comes from the file's description in the asset manager. To change it, edit the description there.
- Audio file: click Add audio file to add audio to the question.
When you browse for a file, the panel switches to the gallery. Pick a file there, or upload a new one in the asset manager. Click Back to settings to return.
Answers
- Background image per answer: turn this on to show an image with each answer. Each answer box then gets an image slot under its text.
- Click Choose an image to pick an image from the gallery, or drop an image file onto the slot.
- Once an image is set, use Replace or Remove image to change it.
Uploaded files are saved in your cBook's main folder in the asset manager. Supported formats are JPG, PNG, GIF, SVG and WebP. Use JPG, PNG, GIF or SVG for answer images, because learners don't see WebP answer images.
Global feedback
Global feedback is a message window (modal) that appears after the learner submits. It depends on whether the whole question was answered correctly.
- Feedback when correct: turn it on and click Edit to write the message.
- Feedback when wrong: works the same way, for incorrect answers.
- Show feedback automatically: opens the feedback window as soon as the learner submits. If this is off, learners open it themselves with the "See feedback" button.
In the dialog, type your text in Feedback message and click Save feedback. Cancel discards your changes.
If you turn a message off and back on before you leave the slide, your text comes back.
Retry button
- Show "Retry" after a wrong answer: gives learners a Try again button after an incorrect answer.
- Placement:
- On the slide: the button appears in the slide's button area.
- In global feedback: the button appears inside the feedback window. This option is only available once Feedback when wrong has a message. If you remove that message later, the button moves back onto the slide.
Inline feedback for each answer
Besides global feedback, you can give feedback for each answer. Learners see it right next to the answer after they submit.
- Click the comment icon on the right side of an answer.
- The Inline feedback window opens with two fields. Their labels depend on whether the answer is correct:
The answer is⦠| Field "handled correctly" | Field "handled wrongly" |
|---|---|---|
Correct | If the learner selects it | If the learner misses it |
Wrong (a distractor) | If the learner leaves it unselected | If the learner selects it |
- Fill in one or both fields. A filled comment icon shows that the answer has feedback.
If you change whether an answer is correct later, your "handled wrongly" text is kept and moves to the new label.
How evaluation works
- A question counts as correct only if the learner selects all correct answers and none of the wrong ones. Partial answers count as wrong.
- After the learner clicks Evaluate, each answer is marked as correctly selected, wrongly selected or missed, and any inline feedback you wrote for it appears.
- Then the global feedback appears, plus the Try again button and the link to the next slide, if you set them up.
Questions inside a test
When the question is part of a test, the editor is simpler:
- There is no Global feedback section, no Retry button section and no comment icons for inline feedback, because learners get no feedback during a test.
- The button preview says Save Answer instead of Evaluate. In the test, learners save their answer and go on to the next question.
- Question type, media, answers and images work the same as outside a test.
Step-by-step guides
Create a simple single choice question
- Open the question slide.
- Under Question type, select Single choice.
- Click the question placeholder on the slide and type your question. Click Done.
- Click each answer placeholder and type the answer text. Use Add answer if you need more answers.
- Click the check marker of the correct answer.
Add helpful feedback to each answer
- Make sure the question is not inside a test.
- Click the comment icon on a correct answer. Under "If the learner misses it", explain why this answer belongs.
- Click the comment icon on a wrong answer. Under "If the learner selects it", give a hint such as "Re-read the section and try again."
- Leave the other fields empty if you don't need them. Learners only see feedback that has text.
Let learners retry from the feedback window
- In Global feedback, turn on Feedback when wrong and click Edit.
- Write an encouraging message and click Save feedback.
- In Retry button, turn on Show "Retry" after a wrong answer.
- Under Placement, select In global feedback.
- Optional: turn on Show feedback automatically so the window opens right after the learner submits.
Build a question with picture answers
- In Answers, turn on Background image per answer.
- For each answer, drag an image file (JPG or PNG) onto its image slot, or click Choose an image.
- Add a short text to each answer as well, so screen-reader users and learners with slow connections can still tell the answers apart.
Turn a single choice question into a multiple choice question
- Under Question type, select Multiple choice.
- Mark every answer that is correct.
- Remember: learners need to select all correct answers (and nothing else) to answer the question correctly. You might want to say so in the description, for example "Select all that apply."
